This project merges witchcraft and the personal experiences of marginalization that the author faced in order to create protective designs. Inspired by the witch's mark, these designs act as shields against harm and misunderstanding. Through impactful design, she strives to challenge biases, empower women, and reshape narratives. This work encourages the audience to address historical biases for a more inclusive and empathetic future.

Huayi has always been particularly interested in and empathized with witch characters because she found that the social ostracism and malicious accusations that witch characters go through are similar to what she experienced as a child.

Smocking pattern exploration

In Huayi’s design, she integrates witch marks, to craft her unique protective mark, ‘K’&’Y’, representing strength. These distinct marks act as armor, shielding individuals from harm and misunderstandings.

She designed the smocking pattern, then securely fixed and sewed it using professional methods, and finally experimented with gathering the fabric.

She molded several K patterns and a 3D shape of the letter K on the fabric and incorporated her own mark designs into the garments.
