My thesis collection reflects on a journey of embracing inner monsters as symbols of strength and authenticity. I often craft my own monster creatures as symbolic representations to visualize my emotions within my personal "Monster Journals".The whole collection is inspired by the wordings and drawings from my own diary. Investigate the deeper feelings under my own paintings, and explain the stories behind them. BUILD UP MY OWN MONSTER WORLD IN MY COLLECTION.
The deeper feelings underlying my paintings and the stories behind them, establishing my own realm of monsters. Creating my own realm of monsters within this collection, the garments' silhouettes are all inspired from my monster collages. I have spent a lot of time figuring out how to to bring these monster silhouettes to real life, with the aim of distorting and contorting the natural contours of the human body.
All leather fabrics used in my collection are upcycled from second-hand jackets, carefully cut and pieced together to fit them with my pattern pieces. In instances where pattern pieces are too large to be sourced from upcycled garments, such as the oversized sleeves in Look 2, I've turned to upcycled leather fabric obtained from the school's donation center. I intentionally retained some of the original pockets and zipper details from the original upcycled jackets, adding authentic touches to the garments. Other combined fabrics except leather are all natural fabric.

Bio

Xiaoyue Dai, a graduate of fashion design at Parsons School of Design, draws inspiration from introspection to bridge the gap between self-expression and design through visual communication methods. With a penchant for painting, she captures personal emotional expressions and interprets the nuances of the world around her. Xiaoyue's vision is to construct an "emotion bridge" or "communication bridge" connecting herself and her designs. She envisions her garments not only as personal symbols but also as mediums for wearers to connect with themselves, others, and the external world. Embracing the uniqueness of individuals, Xiaoyue advocates for authenticity and self-discovery. She celebrates the uniqueness of every person, believing that one's perceived imperfections are what distinguish them from others.
